Plastic bags are all the rage right now to round out streetstyle looks, and the must-have accessory for 2018. From the structured design from Céline to basic shopping bags, we might well ask ourselves what happened to the Birkin by Hermès, the 2.55 by Chanel, the Lady D by Dior?
These iconic bags have not vanished, do not worry, but it really looks like plastic bags have become the new it-bags du jour. What are you waiting for? Go get one!
A very playful trend that follows in the footsteps of the Arena bag from Balenciaga, a style clearly inspired by Ikea’s Frakta bag shortly after the house launched its XXL shopper, that looks like the classic bag our grandma would use to go grocery shopping. Something new? Not really, as Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton had already offered the checkered nylon shopping bag for SS 2007. –
The classic “bag” concept changed radically when Raf Simons (the Antwerp visionary designer, now at the helm of Calvin Klein) sent down the runway for Jil Sander’s SS 2011 collection a shopping bag. Crafted in orange plastic, it cost under 150 dollars and the whole fashion system fell for it. The designer overturned the idea that to buy an it-bag you have to break the bag, that it has to be leather and has to come in a classic style. His vision paved the way for other “anti-bags”, and instantly became the cool it-bag of the moment.
Hence the shopper from Phoebe Philo for Céline, the leather purses inside the plastic bags by Burberry spotted at the last Christopher Bailey Spring Summer 2018 collection for the brand, as well as the plastic bags from Marine Serre.
