Petition IATSE to Pass Resolution Calling for AFL-CIO to Disaffiliate from Police Unions
This petition is for members of any IATSE guild to show support for our union to pass a resolution calling on the AFL-CIO to terminate affiliations with police unions.  The Writer's Guild of America, East has done this (tinyurl.com/wgaepolice) and IATSE needs to follow suit immediately.

In the words of the WGA, East resolution, "we believe that police unions are incompatible with the AFL-CIO’s stated goals: “to vanquish oppression, privation and cruelty in all their forms,” and to improve the lives of working families and pursue social equity. As long as police unions continue to wield their collective bargaining power as a cudgel, preventing reforms and accountability, no one is safe. Therefore we believe that police unions do not belong in our labor coalition [...] we feel more urgent action is needed.  We call on the Executive Council of the AFL-CIO to enact the process described in Article X, section 8(b) of the AFL-CIO Constitution to suspend the AFL-CIO’s affiliation with the International Union of Police Associations (IUPA), on the constitutional grounds that “the policies or activities of [the IUPA] are consistently directed toward the achievement of the program or purposes of authoritarianism, totalitarianism, terrorism and other forces that suppress individual liberties and freedom of association and oppose the basic principles of free and democratic trade unionism.”

For more about this, here is an op-ed from WGAE council member regarding their resolution http://inthesetimes.com/working/entry/22582/union-afl-cio-writers-guild-disaffiliate-police-unions-wgae

Furthermore, I would argue that our resolution include recommendations for IATSE and other AFL-CIO affiliates to replace or redevelop any community assistance programs currently being supported by police unions.

“As a labor union that represents Black members and people of color of all ethnicities, we have an ethical duty to do everything we can to root out racism in our communities, our homes, and our workplaces, once and for all.”
-Jonas Loeb, IATSE Director of Communications 06/01/20

Have you been a victim of police violence ever, or during the George Floyd protests recently, and feel comfortable sharing that experience?  (Part of the argument for disaffiliating with the police unions is that police present an active safety risk to members of IATSE. If you click "Yes", you may get a follow up email from the organizers of this petition.)
Do you want to be contacted by email with updates on this petition and to join in strategy discussion with other IATSE members on this issue?
